About

The Howard County Family Institute is an education, information and community outreach program of the Office of Children and Families, Department of Community Resources and Services. Our Mission is to assist parents in their parenting role by providing education that enhances caregiver skills, knowledge, and behavior with a vision that all children will start life with a strong foundation. We offer classes, workshops, and informational sessions for parents on many topics, including child development, positive discipline, school readiness, and finding resources. To suggest topics for future workshops or to learn more, please email children@howardcountymd.gov or call 410-313-1940 (voice/relay).  Workshops can also be created or tailored to meet your group’s needs. Submit an On-Site Request Form to the Family Engagement Specialist, at children@howardcountymd.gov.

Positive Solutions for Families (PSF) 
May 1, 8, 15, 22 / noon to 1 p.m. / Register
Learn how to promote children’s social and emotional skills, address challenging behaviors and use positive approaches to manage emotions in this four-part lunch & learn series. For families with children up to age eight.

 

Positive Solutions Cafe
May 22 / 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. / Register
Meet other parents, discuss lessons learned, ask questions and learn more about PSF. Parents will receive free resources to implement the strategies in their own home. Dinner provided; child care is available.

Strengthen your Child’s Coping Skills

Learn strategies to help your child prepare, regulate and deal with small to big life transitions, overwhelming and uncomfortable emotions, worries, disappointment, failure, criticism, and sadness.

Eat, Learn, Grow - Social Emotional

Explore social emotional development, milestones and skills children need to manage emotions and build relationships with others, from birth to age five.

Sibling Rivalry
May 23, 7 to 8 p.m. / Virtual / Register
This workshop is for parents who are experiencing challenges between their children such as arguing, name calling and fighting.

The Parent Pages newsletter is published by the Howard County Office of Children and Families for parents, caregivers, and agencies working with families. Distributed via Constant Contact, each monthly issue features information to help parents and caregivers learn more about positive parenting and  children’s development. It highlights workshops, local resources, events, parenting information, and agency programs targeted to help families grow and thrive in Howard County.

Launch Into Learning is a campaign supported by the Howard County Early Childhood Advisory Council (HCECAC). The goal of HCECAC is to highlight the importance of the early years, for parents and families in particular, but also for early care and education professionals, and other community stakeholders.

Children’s Discovery Fair - Math All Around Us

Content

Howard County Early Childhood Advisory Council (ECAC) is sponsoring the 20th annual Children’s Discovery Fair, a free event for preschoolers, parents and caregivers. This school readiness event is titled Math All Around Us and is a celebration of Howard County’s Month of the Young Child and part of the Launch into Learning initiative. Parents learn important information about school readiness and community resources while children ages 3 to 5 participate in fun, hands-on learning activities.
