ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Columbia was named the sixth “Best City for Summer Jobs” for 2023 by WalletHub, the personal finance outlet. With summer-job seekers in mind, WalletHub compared 182 markets in the U.S. across 21 key indicators of employment outlook, affordability, and downtime-friendliness. Its data set ranged from the median income of part-time workers to the availability of summer jobs, to the commuter-friendliness of jobs.
Summer is not just a season for going on vacation, spending time with friends, and relaxing by the pool. It’s also a prime time to join the workforce, gain work experience and earn some extra spending money, especially for our young people. This ranking is due to our collective efforts to provide employment opportunities for all our residents, regardless of age. This summer, the County is offering a number of job opportunities geared toward our youth and young adults, including our Summer Youth Employment Program and more.
In addition to ranking sixth overall, Columbia also ranked sixth for the youth job market. Howard County’s Office of Workforce Development (OWD) has extended its deadline for its Summer Youth Employment Program to today, May 26th. Geared toward Howard County youth and young adults, age 14 to 24, this six-week, paid program allows young people to explore interests, gain mentorship and establish a professional network, while learning and developing practical job readiness skills.
