ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County Executive Calvin Ball, Recreation & Parks Director A. Raul Delerme, and local leaders today broke ground on several improvements at Huntington Park in Columbia. New amenities will include a new basketball court, softball/baseball backstop, paved paths, water fountain, and park benches. Pictures from the event can be found here.
Huntington Park has beautifully evolved since 1986 when it first opened. In the years since, it’s become a staple for families from across our region who now call Columbia their home. These improvements and expansion will help ensure that every person, of every ability, will have more access to our best amenities and facilities.
“Huntington Park has beautifully evolved since 1986 when it first opened. In the years since, it’s become a staple for families from across our region who now call Columbia their home,” said Ball. “These improvements and expansion will help ensure that every person, of every ability, will have more access to our best amenities and facilities.”
"These placemaking investments in our community will help ensure that an established community, such as Kings Contrivance, stays a wonderful place to live, work, play, and grow," said Councilwoman Christiana Rigby.
Huntington Park originally opened in 1986, and it currently includes a basketball court, open field, paved path, and a playground that includes two separate play areas. The smaller play area is geared toward 2-to-5-year-olds, while the larger area is designed for 5-to-12-year-olds. The playground also features a two-bay swing set and bonded, rubber safety surfacing.
“It gives me great joy to see how well our parks and open spaces are used throughout the entire county,” commented Howard County Director of Recreation & Parks A. Raul Delerme. “My department is continuously updating our parks so that people of all ages and abilities can get up, get out and get active.”
Over the next few months, Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will:
- Relocate the current basketball court;
- Install a water fountain;
- Create new pathways;
- Put in a new backstop for softball and baseball games;
- Add a connection to the existing playground; and
- Install brand new benches.
Huntington Park has been our backyard for 30 years and the reason my family and I chose to move here. The improvements being made will increase accessibility and safety and add walking paths which are all incredibly important to our community. I want to thank Raul Delerme and Rec and Parks, and the County, for this very meaningful park upgrade.
Huntington Park is located at 9695 Clocktower Lane in Columbia. More information about the park can be found at https://www.howardcountymd.gov/recreation-parks/location/huntington-park.
